Born & raised in New York City Marcie spent her early years haunting some of the worlds finest museums. The American Museum of Natural History in particular has had a great influence on her Art. In the early 1970's she moved to Oakland, California to study textiles at The California College of Arts & Crafts. She graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. After leaving school she focused on Pine Needle Basketry.
In 1978 she & her partner William Dubin moved to San Diego, CA. They opened The Shepherdess in April of 1979. At this point Marcie was very interested in exploring the use of beads in her work. She started to embellish her baskets with beads. Through the years the beadwork has become central to her work.
Working with a palette of seed beads, semiprecious & antique beads in assorted sizes & shapes she begins to make spontaneous choices that evolve into a biomorphic synthesis of colors & textures. She is fascinated with the way the different beads play against each other creating jeweled encrustations influenced by Primitive Art & Organic forms mainly found in the Ocean. The pieces are very organic & seem to have a life of their own. She has recently become very interested in working over Armatures to create 3 dimensional forms covered with beads & ribbons.
Her work has been exhibited both Nationally & Internationally. Among the venues she has shown at are the American Craft Museum, New York City, the Ohio Craft Museum, Columbus, Ohio, & the Musée
National des Arts et Tradition Populaires, Paris, France. |
